Position Title:     Bus Driver

Department:      Transportation

Reports To:        Director of Transportation

FLSA Status:      Non-Exempt

*This position could be either full-time or part time depending on need and location: Blackville or Williston.

 

 

JOB TITLE: BUS DRIVER

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

This employee is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of students to and from

designated schools or other destinations in accordance with the laws of the State of South Carolina, rules of the State Board of Education, and policies of Barnwell County Consolidated School District.

 

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

 

1. Studying and observing all laws and regulations of the State Board of

Education and the School Board relating to the transportation of students.

2. Passing an annual physical examination and meeting such other requirements

as may be prescribed by law or regulation.

3. Being clean and neat in appearance and refraining from the use of tobacco

while operating the bus and use of profane language in the presence of students.

4. Attending and participating in meetings and training classes for school

bus drivers and being prepared at any time to pass successfully a drug and alcohol test.

5. Ascertaining and ensuring that transported students observe all regulations

prescribed by law and by the State and local Board.

6. Maintaining order and discipline while transporting students to and from school.

7. Permitting a student to exit off the school bus only at their regular stop except upon written request from parents.

8. Instructing students when leaving the bus stop to cross the highway in

front of the bus only after approaching vehicles have stopped.

9. Instructing transported students to and from school safe riding practices.

10. Supervising emergency evacuation drills at least twice each school year as directed by the transportation supervisor.

11. Preparing immediately after every accident involving a school bus or school bus

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is needed.  Must have passed a physical including drug test.

CDL is required, but can be trained to receive a CDL prior to driving.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

 

Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognized similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.  Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

 

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

 

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

 

Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students.  Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job.  The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times.  The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as students.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers.  The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well being of others.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

 

 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 

 

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school year.  Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
